One-to-One Illustration Tutoring for Children

Inspire Creativity, Build Confidence, and Tell Visual Stories

Hello! I’m Adam, a professional children’s illustrator. I also love teaching children art and illustration.

Learning visual art, such as drawing and digital painting is a wonderful way to nurture a child’s creativity in today’s world. As a former teacher I am particularly interested in helping children develop artistic skills to empower them to express themselves. If you would like to read about why I feel this is so important for young people, please go here.

What I Offer:

Personalised art lessons: Tailored sessions at your home that cater to your child’s interests, skill level, and learning pace.

Curriculum or needs-based: I offer a progressive curriculum of lessons, or I can tailor lessons to your child’s individual needs. See below for information on the curriculum.

Storytelling through art: Encouraging your child to create illustrative narratives through artwork, enhancing both artistic and storytelling abilities.

Skill development: Focusing on fundamental art skills, including drawing, painting, composition, and colour theory.

Creative confidence: Building self-esteem by celebrating individual expression and creative achievements.

Curriculum:

While dipping in and out with tailored sessions can work well, I have found that improving your illustration skills with a specially designed curriculum provides a lot more satisfaction for the student.

Learning progressively with a curriculum is a great way to develop as an illustrator. It is designed to build on what came before, starting with the ABCs of art.

The curriculum includes 4 stages, each comprised of between 2 to 5 mini-courses:

Fundamentals: critical drawing skills, perspective, light and shadow, colour.
Human character design: figure drawing, gesture drawing, character design.
World building: designing exterior and interior environments.
The illustrator: crafting compelling visual narratives, designing dynamic storybook layouts, creating environments that support your characters, bringing scenes to life with colour and light, telling stories through illustration.

A children's illustration in profile/side view showing a 7 year old Indian boy standing facing his mother, who is kneeling in front of him. She is gently holding his right hand in her left hand. With her right hand she is moving his shaggy hair out of his eyes. Both are looking at each other with love.

Learning Resources and Activities:

To enrich the learning experience, I incorporate:

Interactive exercises: Engaging activities that make learning fun and effective.

Art challenges: Weekly prompts to inspire creativity and practice new techniques.

Portfolio development: Assisting students in compiling their artwork, determining what is needed in their portfolio if they want to work professionally, fostering a sense of accomplishment.

While pencil and paper is a great way to start, I also encourage my students to practice with digital art equipment. I use a digital tablet (pictured above) that is connected to my computer. The painting software I use is called Krita and is free! I am happy to advise you on these resources.

About Me:

With years of experience in children’s illustration, my work has been featured in various publications and educational materials. I also have a background in secondary school teaching as well as a most joyful job of being a children’s cycling intructor!

My approach to teaching illustration is patient, encouraging, and tailored to each child’s unique creative journey.

I have a recent enhanced DBS certificate available on request.
